DRAFT PICKS:
Jason Thompson, PF, 6-11, Rider -- The productive big man was the early surprise of the draft -- many expected the Kings to take LSU's Anthony Randolph. But Thompson's rebounding (12.1 per game as a senior, ranked second nationally) and low-post game (20.4 points per game) should help the Kings' weak frontcourt. Sean Singletary, PG, 6-foot, Virginia -- After pulling out of the 2007 draft and returning to Virginia for his senior season, it appears Singletary might have made the right move. He was dealt to Houston in August as part of the Ron Artest deal.
Patrick Ewing Jr., PF, 6-8, Georgetown -- While many expected the son of Knicks great Patrick Ewing to go undrafted, the Kings took a flyer on this high-flyer. He was dealt to Houston in August as part of the Ron Artest deal.
BIGGEST NEEDS: Health. With the Kings' roster all but set for the 2008-09 campaign, they'll need the entire roster to avoid the injury list if they have any hope for the postseason. The Kings have missed out on the playoffs for the last two years, and it may take a minor miracle -- healthy or not -- to avoid being absent for a third straight time.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Beno Udrih re-signed with the Kings for five years at the mid-level exception, much to the Kings' relief and pleasure. But Anthony Johnson left to sign with Orlando.
Big man Lorenzen Wright became a free agent, and the Kings aren't expected to pursue him. Their payroll is approximately $70 million, nearing the luxury tax threshold enough that no more signings are likely this summer.
PLAYER NOTES:
--Beno Udrih re-signed for five years and roughly $33 million. The 25-year-old had planned on playing for his national team in Slovenia, but decided against it so he could train for next season. Udrih will begin his regimen in Las Vegas, working out with the Kings' summer league team and strength coach Daniel Shapiro to get his body right.
--C Brad Miller will be suspended five games to start next season for violating the terms of the NBA/NBAPA Anti-Drug Program. The announcement came on July 10. The specifics of his violation in terms of drug used are not released, but the penalty is most often related to marijuana use.
--According to the Sacramento Bee, Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin will play on the Olympic select team this month in Las Vegas. The team's charge is to scrimmage the U.S. team as they prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The distinction is often seen as a possible primer to being picked for the national team itself in the subsequent Olympics.
--Third-year guard Quincy Douby started his season on the right track at Las Vegas summer league last month after a disappointing 2007-08 campaign. The scorer out of Rutgers had 36 points against Golden State on July 18 and averaged 22.3 points while shooting 48.3 percent from the field.
