DRAFT PICKS:
Jason Thompson, PF, 6-11, Rider -- The productive big man was the early surprise of the draft -- many expected the Kings to take LSU's Anthony Randolph. But Thompson's rebounding (12.1 per game as a senior, ranked second nationally) and low-post game (20.4 points per game) should help the Kings' weak frontcourt. Sean Singletary, PG, 6-foot, Virginia -- After pulling out of the 2007 draft and returning to Virginia for his senior season, it appears Singletary might have made the right move. He was dealt to Houston in August as part of the Ron Artest deal.
Patrick Ewing Jr., PF, 6-8, Georgetown -- While many expected the son of Knicks great Patrick Ewing to go undrafted, the Kings took a flyer on this high-flyer. He was dealt to Houston in August as part of the Ron Artest deal.
PLAYER NOTES:
--C Spencer Hawes came into camp in shape, but he wasn't eager to show off his conditioning in a team-mandated test. According to the Sacramento Bee, Hawes initially refused to take the test because it was the cause of a knee injury entering his rookie season last September. After two days of bypassing the test and possibly receiving fines, Hawes took the test and passed it on the first try.
--C Brad Miller will be suspended five games to start the season for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program. According to the Sacramento Bee, Miller failed a drug test for marijuana for a third time.
--F Shelden Williams has until the end of the month to prove to the Kings that he's worth keeping around for one more season. The deadline for his 2009-10 team option is Oct. 31, and Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie told the Bee he has yet to make a decision on the $4.3 million option. The notion of the Kings picking it up seems unlikely; they are savoring potential salary cap space for the next two summers.
--F-G John Salmons will start the season as the starting small forward, according to coach Reggie Theus. The seven-year veteran should be in position to have a career year with the absence of Ron Artest.
