Sacramento Kings Notes, Quotes 2009-10-08

Sacramento Kings Notes, Quotes 2009-10-08--The Kings signed swingman Desmond Mason, adding the nine-year veteran to their youth-filled roster with the hope that he can contribute as he did in his younger years.

He started training camp by doing just that, with Kings coach Paul Westphal raving that Mason looked as good as new after dealing with such physical hurdles last season. Mason missed the second half of last season in Oklahoma City after hyperextending his right knee on Jan. 28 and having arthroscopic surgery days later. Mason has a non-guaranteed contract but looks primed to make the team's regular-season roster.

--The Kings have been going to great lengths to grow their dwindling fan base. This month alone, they scheduled an open practice Oct. 3 in which fans could attend -- and park -- for free and watch the team scrimmage. They also offered a limited amount of free tickets to a preseason game to state workers, attempting to reward the people whose pay has been cut so steadily in recent months because of the ongoing recession.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "No, no, no. There's no way. We love the market. We love our fans. This is the only place we want to be." -- Kings owner Gavin Maloof, in The Sacramento Bee, when asked if the team could file for relocation by the March deadline.
