Sacramento Kings Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19

Sacramento Kings Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19--The Kings signed swingman Desmond Mason on Sept. 17, adding the nine-year veteran to their youth-filled roster with the hope that he can contribute as he did in his younger years. Mason missed the second half of last season in Oklahoma City after hyperextending his right knee on Jan. 28 and having arthroscopic surgery days later. According to the Sacramento Bee, he signed a one-year deal for the league minimum of $1.18 million that is not guaranteed. He will be fighting for minutes with last year's starting small forward, Andres Nocioni, fifth-year swingman Francisco Garcia and youngsters Donte' Greene (second season) and Omri Casspi (rookie).

--The Kings also signed rookie Jon Brockman on Sept. 15. The University of Washington forward was drafted 38th overall by the Kings, who struggled mightily on the glass last season and see the burly 6-foot-7 forward as part of the solution. According to the Sacramento Bee, Brockman signed a guaranteed one-year deal worth approximately $457,000.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I guess the message I want to send to the young players and probably to the loyal fans as well is that nobody is given playing time. We are going into this season trying to win as many games as we can, and develop the players to the point where they can show improvement." -- Kings coach Paul Westphal, on how the signing of Desmond Mason will add to training camp competition, as told to The Sacramento Bee.
