Sacramento Kings Getting Inside 2009-12-12

Sacramento Kings Getting Inside 2009-12-12The Kings didn't need to be convinced that they need a more intimidating defensive presence down low, but their last four games have surely convinced anyone who did.

They've given up an average of 111 points in losing four straight, with much of the damage being done down low. While the perimeter defense has improved this season thanks partly to lengthy rookie guard Tyreke Evans, the big man tandem of Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson continues to put up an ineffective defensive effort.

The Hornets' game was the aberration in the stretch, scoring 115 points in their Dec. 5 win despite shooting just 43.2 percent. Since then, however, Miami shot 58.6 percent in its win on Saturday, followed by a 50 percent showing from New Orleans on Tuesday and San Antonio's 55.3 percent shooting night Wednesday.

The Kings are currently ranked 25th in the league in points allowed (105 per game) and tied with four teams for 22nd in opponents' field-goal percentage (47.0 percent).

SPURS 118, KINGS 106: The combination of the Kings missing the easiest of shots and the Spurs making the toughest of ones led to the home team's win. Sacramento hit just eight of 15 free throws, while San Antonio hit eight of nine threes at AT&T Center Wednesday night. Rookie forward Omri Casspi scored a team-best 20 points in the loss.
